Welcome to Dots and Kisses,
I am a wife, mother of two, a university student and a Creator of Arts and Crafts that come from the heart.
I have always loved sharing what I know. From a young age, I was encouraged to get in and create, whether it was with wool, fabric, food or sand. My Mother gave me a book that had creative projects in them to encourage me to read. Reading and spelling have never come easily to me. But I love numbers, how easily, black and white they are! I was drawn to sewing as a child, working with sewing patterns even if I did not understand all the words, I could follow the pictures. I would sit with my Grandmother as she showed me how to knit or crochet blankets, jumpers and socks. During my school years, I only ever had home-made jumpers. I believe it made her happy to create for her family. I learnt to sew watching my Mother. She made all our school uniforms, play clothes and best dresses. I helped my Grandmother and Mother re-cover furniture, make curtains and watched when they repaired tents.
After leaving school, I took on jobs as a shop assistant, waitress, office clerk, florist and telephone operator. I was told that if I could not read well, I would only ever work in unskilled jobs. In my spare time I would knit and sew, I still have the jumpers I made while sitting on the train which took an hour in and an hour out of the city.
My life changed when I was sponsored to attend TAFE and obtained an Advanced Certificate of Clothing Manufacture from TAFE Victoria. I worked as a Tailor for many years. Now, this was a job I enjoyed. I was gifted to be able to care for my children without having to leave the house to work. I made almost all of the children’s clothing, bedding and blankets. The skills I had, allowed me to work as a tailor from home and be there for the children. I have worked as a Tailor in an alteration shop for a while. It was very hard to get skilled workers who had the quality of work skills to be able to operate in a shop. This is one of the reasons I would love to teach others the skills required to do some of the more common alterations, like hemming and altering sleeves.
This took me to a personal challenge in my life where I am now studying online through Curtin University to obtain a Bachelor of Fine
